Choosing a Provider
Midwives are experts in the care of healthy low-risk pregnancies. While you are under the care of a midwife, you will not have a doctor unless there are concerns or complications with your pregnancy. They focus more on encouraging vaginal birth and providing holistic care for pregnancy and the postpartum period. There’s an emphasis on education, with a focus on topics such as nutrition, breastfeeding, and infant care.
Family physicians are also qualified to provide safe and comprehensive prenatal care for women during their pregnancy, labor, and birth; however, they only deliver babies in a hospital. Both midwives and family doctors are able to order tests during pregnancy including ultrasounds, blood work as well as genetic testing.
Obstetricians are physicians who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, and the women's reproductive system. They are the only care provider able to perform cesarean sections if required. As with family physicians, they only oversee childbirth in a hospital setting. They are trained to manage pregnancy-related complications with medical interventions such as inductions or assisted deliveries.
Midwives & Birthing Center

While certified midwives will often work with a labor and delivery team that can include an OB-GYN, in general, they focus on reducing a pregnant woman’s reliance on medical interventions unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Midwives
The Quebec Midwives Association can help pregnant women find a midwife and provide general information. To contact the association, call (514) 738-8090.
Birthing Centers
The Côte-des-Neiges Birthing Centre is a welcoming space for pregnant women and families in the Montreal area who wish to experience pregnancy and childbirth with the help of midwives. These services, covered by the health insurance card, are integrated into the perinatal program of CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.
Midwives offer pre-and post-natal pregnancy follow-up and natural childbirth to healthy women whose pregnancies are proceeding normally. The physical environment of the Birthing Centre and the equipment in it promote and protect the natural and physiological course of pregnancy, childbirth, and the reception of the newborn.
